August 19, 2008Summer Hair = Forever Young: A Warped '08 Recap
So, Warped Tour is over and I gotta be honest, I'm experiencing some post-tour blues. You never would guess I'd feel this way if you read my first week twitters. (To recap, I was on The Audition's bus, and it was continually malfunctioning. Then I had to find a new bus and do the whole new kid at school thing all over again)
I wanted to blog every day, but there was an issue of personal space (lack thereof) and, I don't know, I didn't want to pass judgement on anyone or anything right away, if that makes sense. I uploaded tons of pics and videos constantly, but despite primarily being a blogger, I had trouble blogging. I'm not the kind of person who hangs out with a band member for 30 minutes and then goes OMG WE ARE BFF and then immediately log on to various interwebz to recount every detail of the conversation/interaction. And maybe thats backwards and I need someone to slug some journalistic intent into me or maybe I just live in fear of being anything like that MS-paint abusing bastard Perez Hilton. What I know is everyone is not one thing all the time. Sometimes someone needs a shower, needs a sandwich, needs alone time, needs a phone call from their mom. I don't believe in snap judgements, even though I make them in my head, so I try to sort out why I feel a certain way about a person before I put my fingers to the keys. Maybe that's ridiculously over analytical, but I GET the power of the internet and being behind a computer screen shouldn't make you feel like you can say things you wouldn't normally say to someone's face. I watched tons of bands. I sang along to so many songs. I almost passed out a few times. I took a ton of videos. I met a lot of kickass people and made several solid friends. I accidentally ate a few bugs in Florida. I cried both times I left. I had good conversations. I had lunch sitting across from people who wrote some of my favorite songs. Would I seem cooler if I name dropped? Probably, but now is not the time. Secondly, there really isn't anything that different about being a girl on tour aside from the obvious guys can pee easy anywhere aspect. Some touring boys are actually pretty sanitary and don't like their bus to smell like feet, despite whatever misconception you may have had. Oh, but truck stops don't carry freaking LOTION so if you're concerned with being soft and moisturized, you better bring your own supplies. Most things can be macguyvered if properly prepared. Just don't be shy about hooking a hose up to the side of a venue and showering in your bikini while kids file in. If you gotta get clean, you gotta get clean. Thirdly, Warped can be a bit cliquish at times, but the authentic connections will make your life. I really didn't anticipate becoming attached to The Lordz of Brooklyn, but they were the sweetest group of guys ever. I got to be part of the best conversation between Kaves from The Lordz and Tatiana from Tat. Yonnas from The Pirate Signal was maybe my favorite person to talk to. He's so instrospective and open-minded. I had seriously fun times with Aisha (TAI merch girl), and some fun slightly-drunken conversations with people I didn't even know were in bands 'til I was in their photo pit later. Mendoza spread warped gossip and saved my life with allergy meds. I often sought shade in the Glamour Kills tent or in the Guitar Center weblab (shoutout to Sara!) MC Chris made everyone on our bus die with laughter, constantly, and effortlessly. I got to meet my Buzznet BFF Trendysecret, as well as the amazing talented Unsceneunheard and her sidekick Bellavenom. I lurked the FBR tent to hang out with Metal and Chad. Evan gave me directions to catering every day. I bought two awesome bags from Two Tree Designs and probably will buy more in the future because I love their stuff and Pablo is cool. I got some quality time in with Brianfax while he was on the tour, and got to hang with Jenrrray in Portland. I tried to watch Broadway Calls & Tat as much as possible because they're solid people. And Sirah made me cry on the last day. But the Warped Tour best friend award goes to Lazer, who does merch for Broadway Calls. He made me watch strange bands (Gil Manteras Party Dream, Hunter Revenge), complained whenever I got bigger servings of mashed potatoes, critiqued by iTunes library, send me more than a few texts that said "Wake up!" -but- he kept me entertained in the notoriously long catering lines (and even let me cut twice) and, while a large majority of people on tour were concerned with getting f*cked up in their free time (I'm not straight edge, but I don't smoke and I don't drink very often) I could be like, so, Lazer, I have some candy cigarettes, wanna hang out? and that would work. Also, he can draw goldfish pretty well. All in all, it was a good experience, and I'd do it again. I have a lot of respect for touring bands and a crazy amount of respect for the artists who were out there hustling every day with very little support just so they could keep doing what they love. Warped Tour can make you or break you -- this year especially, with gas prices and all -- so I wish nothing but success for the bands that busted their @sses (and wallets) out there this year. So long, and thanks for all the shoes (ok, i didn't get any shoes, but I really wanted to say that) -breesays

August 14, 2008Fresno Warped: Saporta Hips Don't Lie, Hurley Deflates
Fresno was kind of out of control hot (104 degrees) and my feet were burning inside my shoes and all the pictures I took came out REALLY BRIGHT.
![]() But I finally caught some of Katy Perry's set (she kinda dresses like I did in 5th grade... minus the boobs), checked out Bring Me The Horizon (too screamy for me), rocked out to The Vandals (I do love them), and did another round of Cobra Starship. ![]() I watched some of Broadway Calls before the stage deflated on them and they couldn't get it back up again. (Annnnnd if I said that out loud, I'm sure someone around me would've followed that sentence with "that's what she said.") From First To Last and The Briggs served dinner last night. Bus call was super early, so everyone was still kind of wired once we started rolling... it probably didn't help that I was sharing my saltwater taffy stash with everyone. And by everyone, I mean MC Chris. That dude is FUNNY. Anyway, that day I also tried to shave my legs dry. DON'T EVER DO THIS. Ok, my fingers are getting numb because I'm sitting under the A/C. Must relocate before any more blogging can happen.

August 12, 2008POST SCRIPT
So I decide to go on a little walk with Pablo and see if Denny's has that Plain White Shake that I've been dying to get in my belly... but no, they don't. So we take a stroll and I nearly get kidnapped when this red truck pulls up to the curb. Well, not really, I think they were gonna say something then Pablo pushed on the inside of the sidewalk and was like, uh, you walk on this side of me.
Then were walking under the bridge to get to the bus and I hear SQUEAK SQUEAK sounds. I'm like, um, are those rats I hear? No, Pablo says, probably bats. BATS?! BATS?! ARE YOU BEING SERIOUS?! (Maybe he meant cats. Soft, fluffy... squeaking... cats? Yeah, bats, he says. Aw hell nah. And I run to the bus.

Sacramento smells like pee
But they have tons of candy stores. So I stocked up on saltwater taffy. And candy cigarettes. Yeah, my dentist is stoked.
Anyway, today and yesterday were off days. Pretty uneventful given that our bus never really goes where everyone else does. Bummout. Yesterday we were at a campground in Redding, CA. I was like, campground? More grass, more nature? I got so much dirt up my nose at St. Helen's warped I could recreate Mount Rushmore. Do not want more nature. Kthxbai. At St. Helens Warped I got to meet the fabulous Jenrrray! I also watched Motion City Soundtrack, Rise Against & The Street Dogs (they had the biggest circle pit ever). Weirdest band I saw? Gil Manteras Party Dream. Um, or something like that. I went to see them because Lazer (who works for Broadway Calls) insisted it would be the best experience of my life. Let me give you a visual, and you can imagine the rest: ![]() ![]() A lot of bands were watching this band. "Just listen to their songs!" insists Yonnas of The Pirate Signal. I was like, dude. How can I listen to their songs when a dude in a gold cape is attempting to do a headstand? Really, if I had not already titled yesterdays journal, I would definitely consider THIS day way more spandex-tacular. Then of course I watched All Time Low. And their stage started to deflate and fall on them during their set. Haha. I have a video, its fantastic. But my plug-in internet doesn't play nicely with video uploads. So just HOLD ON. Um, and then I went back to my bus because of my raging sinus/allergy headache. I think I'm just allergic to places that aren't California. Honestly. Today were back in CA, and I'm fine. Oregon - headache. Washington - headache. I guess I need smog. Ha! Fresno Warped tomorrow and I've promised some of my (new) busmates that I'd come check them out... so I'll be spending a couple hours in the Skull Candy tent. And now I must flee to my bunk to read my 2 books before PINK EYE GIRL comes back on the bus. I ain't catchin' that ish.

August 10, 2008Warped Tour 8/9/08: Spandex-tacular things
So yesterday I re-joined Warped Tour at The Gorge Amphitheatre. I woke at 5am to catch a 7:30 flight to Seattle, then rannnn across the airport to catch my connecting flight on this itty bitty plane. Upon taking my seat, a little blonde boy with long lashes leaned over and shouts, "So what's your name?" I said Bree. He goes, "HiBreemynameisTylerandI'mfouryearsold!" Super cute. So then I land in Wenatchee Valley (which smells really good, by the way and call a cab to take me to the Gorge. The drive was really pretty. There were orchards everywhere... Bosc Pears, Gala Apples, Lima Beans... fields and fields of it. It was making me really hungry.
![]() So I get to Warped and get myself situated on my bus again, the venture out to find people and announce my return. Ok, actually I went to catering first and it was so windy my freakin LEMON BAR BLEW AWAY. Sad. I took some pics of We The Kings (they didn't turn out very good, though), The Academy Is..., shotgunned a beer with The Audition, listened to Lazer's traumatizing van crash experience, watched Motion City Soundtrack and Cobra Starship from onstage where a bunch of other bands were there to support. Oh, by the way, are Vicky T and Ziggy (TAI merch dude) an item? They looked all cutesy and cozy a few times yesterday. ![]() Also, I helped Metal make his transition from regular merch dude to spandex-tacular dancing machine for his appearance during Cobra's performance of "Bring It"... I was unaware that he was going to strip down even FURTHER into a Borat-like mankini thing. No, really. Everyone at the Gorge watching Cobra yesterday got to see a lot of Metal. I wonder if I was supposed to keep his identity secret? Hmm. Alright, I have been summoned to go out among the masses and try to take some NONSUCKY pictures. I leave you with this video.
